An investigation is continuing into last weekend's serious crash at Opito Bay, in which a vehicle with two 16-year-old males left Opito Bay Rd near Kerikeri, smashed through a barrier and plunged 15m down a bank.
The vehicle came to rest on its side with one of the boys trappedunderneath it. The crash occurred about 1am on Saturday, December 6.
Volunteers from the Kerikeri and Paihia fire brigades had to secure the wreck to stop it rolling further before extracting the trapped youth could begin.
A specialist lines crew from Paihia helped get the victims up the cliff to the waiting ambulances.
They were taken to nearby Doves Bay, where the Northland Electricity Rescue Helicopter was waiting to fly them to Whangarei Hospital.
