A Northland woman critically injured in a crash on State Highway 10 near Kaeo this morning has died.
The 52-year-old was heading south when she veered onto gravel at the corner of Matauri Bay Link Rd, travelling along the shoulder for about 150m before her vehicle crossed to the wrong
side of the road, hit a ditch and somersaulted.
Both the driver and her dog were thrown from the vehicle. The car, a VW hatchback, came to rest on the bank.
State Highway 10 was closed for almost four hours with traffic diverted via Matauri Bay Rd and Matauri Bay Link Rd.
The woman was stabilised by St John paramedics and flown in a critical condition to Whangarei Hospital by the Northland Electricity Rescue Helicopter about 8.30am. Her dog, a jack russell, died at the scene.
