An old house being moved from Auckland blocked State Highway One south of Whangarei for two hours after it fell off the back of a truck while going the wrong way round a roundabout.
Whangarei Police Sergeant Lance Goulsbro said the house came off the back of a Pile Up movingtruck about 5.30am yesterday morning as the truck was going round the roundabout at the intersection of SH1 and SH15a.
Mr Goulsbro said the house blocked the south-bound lane of the highway for two hours, with traffic down to one lane until about 7.30am.
Police were investigating the exact cause of the accident, but he said the house was being transported from west Auckland and had managed to negotiate all the obstacles on the highway without any problems until it hit the Port Marsden Highway turnoff.
Mr Goulsbro said it appeared that as the truck was going the wrong way round the roundabout - as is the norm for such operations because it made things easier - the house slid off.
The house was put back on the truck and was to have continued it's journey today.
Pile Up house movers owner Jeremy O'Neill said it was freak accident and he doesn't know why the house came off the truck.
Mr O'Neill said nobody was hurt and there was only minor damage to the house, including a few broken windows and joists.
