POWER PACK: Hemi Pompey was one of the Northpower contingent proving which work place has the brightest crew.

We've said it before and we'll say it again - few horse racing meets match the notoriously fun Dargaville Racing Club's picnic events.

Yesterday's Spring Meeting was no exception, with an enthusiastic and colourful crowd warming up well before the eight race meet started with the $7000 Dargaville Benchmark 2000 at 12.50pm.

As usual, the town turned out for one of its favourite events and, as well as car-loads, people arrived by bus from around Northland and Auckland. The day's fun included racegoers dressed up in themed clobber, notably the busload of power-packing, fluoro-garbed Northpower workers, and the Fashion in the Field stakes. Oh, and the gees-gees had a good outing, too, on what trainers and riders said was an ideal track - firm but not too hard.

Reporter Lindy Laird and photographer Michael Cunningham managed a quick dash around the spectacle early in the afternoon.
