Joseph Hughes gets acquainted with the colour blue as he works on his latest lino cut - a composition inspired by a coffee cup. The Whangarei seven-year-old is one of a dozen kids passing the school holidays at Te Kowhai Print Trust, at the Quarry. Trust secretary Shonah Scott said the four-dayintensive course focussed on creative print-making techniques, including screen printing, lino cuts and wood cuts. The children, aged seven to 12, were learning to work in a real workplace and getting a feeling for print-making as an artform. "They're using their imagination to produce results they should be very proud of ... and it's expanding their way of looking of the world." The print-making workshop is just one of the holiday programmes designed to get kids learning new skills, and keep them out of their parents' hair. Other holiday programmes around the North are being run by Sport Northland, and at the Aquatic Centre, Chipmunks and SkyCity cinemas.
