Mangapai's Taylor Still looks to hold off the Maungakaramea defence during her side's loss.

Mangapai's Taylor Still looks to hold off the Maungakaramea defence during her side's loss.

A spirited effort was evident in the Mangapai premier women side's round-four match, despite the young team going down 9-1 to Maungakaramea.

After a 16-goal drubbing in their round-three loss to Springfield last week, Mangapai coach Richard Redfurn was pleased with his team's ability to persevere.

"It's been a hard road," Redfurn said.

"After the first game against Old Girls we had our full compliment of players. The last few weeks we've had absences due to injury or other sporting events, so it hasn't boded well for the results side of things."

The results Redfurn speaks of relate to the Mangapai premier women's side having nearly 40 goals scored against them in the first three rounds of competition this year.

Although the scoreline reflects a worrying sign for the development of the side, Mangapai's string of painful results have been masked by off-field sanctions imposed on the team since their inception into the women's premier grade last year.

"When we set up Mangapai premier women there were certain sanctions put in place," Redfurn said.

"[The] first sanction is that we're not allowed to approach other players from other clubs. It is a challenge."

The second sanction governs that Mangapai had to treat their first two years in the grade as development years. Once the two-year development phase is over, and adjudicators are happy with the team's performance, they will be able to improve their relationships with feeder teams and clubs.

"We're playing against teams who are well and truly entrenched in Whangarei Hockey, so this is just a stepping stone," Redfurn said.

"After this year we will be able to look at other clubs and [do] a bit of scouting."

Moving forward, the Mangapai squad are keen to stay focused on the here and now.

"Every week they've [the players] got a game and they're getting good coaching," Redfurn said.

"We've been very hindered, it's been hard on the girls [but] at some stage we will have a strong team."

Redfurn said there had been "no real indication" of his side's place in the competition being reviewed at present.
