Heavy rain has lashed Northland overnight, leaving residents worried they could be facing another flooding event.

More than 55 millimetres of rain fell in at least one area of Northland in the 12 hours from 7pm last night, MetService said, with around 30-35mm falling in most places.

Almost 22mm of rain fell in Whangarei overnight.

Auckland also suffered heavy rain, with 55mm in the wettest area, and between 30-35mm across most of the city.

State Highway 10 remains closed at Kaeo, after a night of heavy rain, Newstalk ZB reported.

Further south, Whangarei farmer Ben Smith told the broadcaster conditions were nearly as bad as they were during July's storms.

"All the spillways are spilling at the moment. A lot of the regrowth that people have done is underwater now."

Top Energy crews have worked late into the night restoring power to 250 homes, after outages caused by a slip and falling trees.

The heavy rain and wind which battered Northland overnight have already eased off this morning, with the rain forecast to move south, duty forecaster Frances Russell said.

A weather warning was lifted for Northland and Auckland at 6am. However, the warning, which includes wind as well as rain, was still in place for Coromandel and Gisborne.

The warning is in place for Coromandel until 12pm today, while weather conditions in Gisborne weren't expected to ease until Tuesday morning, Ms Russell said.

Between 60-80mm of rain was forecast to fall from 9pm last night to 12pm today across the Coromandel.

Rain will gradually ease today over Auckland and Coromandel today, she said.

"For a lot of the upper North Island, we're expecting rain, and in the east as well, but we're not expecting warning amounts for those areas," she said,.

"At this stage we're expecting rain north of Taranaki and through the east coast of the North Island, with just a few showers in Wairarapa. In the west, from Taranaki down through to Wellington, we're expecting it to be quite fine."

Northland will clear during the day, becoming fine by this evening, she said.
