A $100,000 grant from Foundation North will give Northland youth the chance to attend the 10 Day Youth Development Programme on board the iconic tall ship - Spirit of New Zealand.

The Spirit of Adventure Trust has announced funding support approved by Foundation North of $100,000 towards Youth Scholarships. The scholarships will support youth from Northland and Auckland to attend the programme.

Particular focus in awarding the scholarships will be towards Maori and Pacifica students from secondary schools participating with the trust to support furthering the personal growth and development of their students.

The potential impact of the 10 Day Development Voyage programme has been proven time and time again in research studies to build confidence, resilience and self-esteem in youth. But importantly, for the teens themselves, it gets them outside their comfort zone facing challenges they never thought they could. Effectively this partnership will create life-changing experiences so youth become confident and competent contributors to their whanau and the country.

The Spirit of Adventure Trust was established in 1972 with the generous support of Lou Fisher, to give New Zealand youth access to a character youth development programme conducted in a maritime environment.

The mission is: To empower young New Zealanders to reach their full potential through the challenge of the sea.

The trust develops youth trainees to be confident, connected, resilient, actively involved, life-long learners and networkers.

Since the trust's inception, more than 75,000 young people have benefited from the youth development voyages.

Most voyage participants are selected from secondary schools. Each 10-Day Development Voyage takes on board 40 trainees.
