An explosive device found at a quarry site in Whangārei today has been disposed of by a series of controlled detonations.

The The New Zealand Defence Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit detonated the device this afternoon after travelling from Auckland.

The quarry area on Kiripaka Rd, Tikipunga, was evacuated by police as a precaution earlier today.

Police said there was no further risk to the public from the device and were preparing to reopen the area.
