A leprechaun was seen on the croquet lawns at Kensington on St Patrick's Day. With green hats, tops, trousers, tattoos, ribbons and balloons as well, the lawns were certainly colourful.

The leprechaun turned out to be Trevor McCreedy from the Whangarei Club.

The games were played in perfect weather, with a good mix of golf and association members enjoying this fun tournament.

Winners were George Depree and Dennis Pamplin (association croquet) and Neville King and Carol Christmas (golf).

Jan King was the lucky dip winner.

Some Irish jokes were enjoyed, as was a short sing-song; short because everyone was singing out of tune.

On Monday, the Whangarei Club held its Annual Charity Tournament. This year, Parkinson's Northland was chosen as the recipient of the day's proceeds.

The playing conditions were perfect until 2pm when two showers threatened to spoil the rest of the games. But the croquet continued after players scrambled to find rain jackets. There were seven lawns in use to avoid too much double-banking.

One woman who thought her blue ball would go straight through a hoop wasn't too pleased when it didn't but made up for it in her next turn.

The player of the day was Jo Cunneen, in her first season playing association croquet. She made some impressive shots, particularly achieving a corner cannon - an advanced shot.

Winners were: Association croquet - Rogan Williscroft, Verna Williscroft, Mike Midgely and Sally Mayor with Tricia MacGowan winner of the lucky dip.

Golf croquet: Mait Cole, John Christmas, Lois Wilkinson (who travelled from Kerikeri), Colleen McCreedy, Elizabeth McBeth, and Joan Dixon received prizes, with Ellen Harding the lucky dip. Prizes were presented by Wilma Davies-Colley from Parkinson's Northland, who was accompanied by Joyce Armstrong and Susie Abraham.

A cheque for $321.50 was presented at the end of proceedings.

The Golf Croquet Silver Badges will be played tomorrow with Kensington hosting the Primary Division and Whangarei the Intermediates and Premier players.

Last year's silver badge winners will face stiff opposition.
