A well-known criminal on the run from police has phoned officers in Kerikeri but is yet to turn himself in.

Simon Kerr featured on the Northland police Facebook page four weeks ago after police issued a warrant for his arrest for breaching parole orders.

The 56-year-old was once the leader of the "hole-in-the-wall" gang, which ripped out safes and ATMs on a nationwide crime spree, escaping with thousands of dollars in jewellery and cash.

He also successfully escaped from prison several times.

Police confirmed Kerr had contacted them last week to discuss matters but was yet to front at a police station.

Kerr also "liked" the post in which he featured on the police Facebook page, and in the comments Kerr engaged in a conversation with others he knew also posting on the page.

Some of the comments have been removed.

He was featured on television's Police Ten 7 programme last month as a wanted person.

Kerr has links to the Far North but has connections across the North Island.

He is described as European, 1.9m, of medium build and with a tattoo of a bat on each side of his neck.

It was while inside at Ngawha Prison in Northland that he found art and began painting.

He has had several exhibitions in Wellington and some of his works are on display in a Rawene cafe.

If you have seen Simon Kerr, or know where he is, call 111 or contact Senior Sergeant Peter Robinson at Kerikeri police on (09) 407 9211. You can also report information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
