Caleb Boswell-Smith took six for 23 on the weekend against City.

Caleb Boswell-Smith took six for 23 on the weekend against City.

No one can say Whangarei's Caleb Boswell-Smith didn't give his all, claiming an impressive six for 23 as his side went down by one wicket.

In a Lion Red Cup match which saw only 209 runs scored in total, Boswell-Smith nearly made his Zest Insurance Whangarei Boys' High School side's 104 all out defendable.

However, it wasn't to be for Boys' High in the penultimate round of one-day club cricket as City sneaked away with the win on Saturday.

With Boswell-Smith claiming the wickets of Ian Page, Steve Morris, Jessie Griffiths, Jake Serotski, Brad Lang and Peter Lamberts, City left it to their number 10 and 11 batsmen to bring them home.

Top scoring for City was opener Zak Khawaja with 28, before being run out by man of the moment Boswell-Smith - combining with Chamodh Peiris. The only other batsmen to reach double figures for City were Joey Yovich [16] and Page [10].

Earlier in the day, Tim Osbaldiston top scored for Boys' High with 20, with Peiris being the only other batsman to reach double figures.

Meanwhile, in what was a reply of the two-day final - and what will be the one-day final - Maungakaramea again came out on top against Kaipara Flats.

Posting 157, after being bowled out in the 31st over, Kaipara fell nine runs short as a sharp spell from Maungakaramea's Scott Harris produced three for 14 from five overs.

For Maungakaramea, New Zealand representative Kurtley Watson led the way with a swift 34 from 38, which included three fours and a six. Backing Watson up was his Northland team mate Neal Parlane, scoring a measured 29.

With the ball, Kaipara's Jordon Kose was the pick of the bowlers with his three for 13 - supported by teammate Shaun Beamish [three for 29].

For Kaipara, Findlay Buchanan was the pick of the batsmen with his 40, followed by Michael O'Flaherty with 31.

In the remaining Lion Red Cup match from the weekend, Kamo overcame Onerahi Central.

Next weekend sees club cricket come to a close, with a double header seeing the final round of matches take place before the final is played at Cobham Oval on Sunday.

With one round of matches remaining, Maungakaramea and Kaipara Flats are comfortably top of the lot - meaning a third meeting in just over a month.
