Crash closes SH1 in Northland

A fatal vehicle crash has closed State Highway 1 in Northland this afternoon.

Police, fire and ambulance services were called to the crash on SH1 near Mata, 22km south of Whangarei, about 5pm.

One person has died with three others seriously injured in the crash involving four vehicles - three cars and a light truck.

Diversions have been put in place. Southbound traffic is being diverted through Mangapai Rd to Paparoa and northbound traffic the reverse.

Emergency service workers will be at the scene for some time. The serious crash investigator is enroute.
