Auckland company Reset Urban Design have presented the council with two options for the Cameron Street Mall extension; the first retains a narrow one-way traffic lane through a shared space plan which would cost about $2.5 millon, while the second is a full pedestrian mall which would cost $4.3 millon.
The council's report proposes that the laneway option will be undertaken first and extended to the mall option in three to five years.
The council will receive submissions on the mall plans until February next year.
Plans to convert the Town Basin carpark adjacent to the Victoria Bridge into a park area will be consulted on separately and submissions will be received until April next year.
Three different options have beenproposed for the park ranging in estimated cost from $2.2 millon to $3 millon.
One of the options would feature a youth-orientated activity space that could include skate, bmx, climbing and basketball facilities, while another would have a large water feature/tidal pool as its central focus.
The third option would feature a big lawn area, which, the report says, would run as a extension to the proposed Hundertwasser Art Centre.
Car parking at the site would be reduced to 66 visitor carparks. If council agreed to the plans work would not begin until 2014/2015.
