Paihia: It's Northland's new crispy chip capital.
Twilight Zone in Traders Mall, off Marsden Rd, has scooped the Northland to North Shore top award in the Crisco Oils Best Chip Shop competition.
Dawn Nickerson, sampling her wares here with co-owner Jim Hunt, said she was happy enough just to have made the finals.
She was thrilled to learn last week the shop came top of the North.
More than 500 shops had entered the quest to find the healthiest, tastiest and crispiest chips in the country.
While she can reveal her chips are cooked in cholesterol-free cottonseed oil, Dawn won't part with her secret batter recipe.
"I just brought what I used to do at home," said the former bait shop owner.
The shop also sells fresh fish, and they'll cook your filleted catch, sell you a healthy side salad and slip in a chocolate fish to finish.
Public voting and a judging panel picked the top 20 shops for each of the six regions, and mystery judges whittled down the finalists.
Judging criteria included chip freshness and colour, shop cleanliness and customer service; the national winner was Fish Boys in Petone, Wellington.
The six finalists had an average fat content of 8.2 percent in their chips, below the recommended average.
