Clued-up locals ready for another cash stash

More hidden cash will be up for grabs in a treasure hunt thanks to a mystery donor who has dubbed himself Harry.

The Whangarei man and his wife are stunned by the response to their Facebook page " Find our cash Whangarei" they set up just over a week ago with 1800 people liking their page so far.

The couple established the page after watching a television show in which clues are posted in social media forums and followers go on a treasure hunt to find money hidden in public places.

They thought it would be a great idea and last Wednesday, after three days of extensive searching, two Whangarei women were the first "hunters" to team up and uncover a hidden stash of cash.

The $100 in a small plastic bag was covered by shells beneath the HMNZS Canterbury propeller near Kissing Point.

Now the idea has generated so much momentum and interest "Harry" is planting a second stash of cash this Friday.

"What started as a crazy idea has led to a number of serious offers of support in way of cash or vouchers from individuals and local business," he said.

Messages of support from former Whangarei residents now living around the world and New Zealand had come flooding in .

Although there were some who thought the page was a hoax.

"This is legitimate. People have to understand it's a free, fun activity for the community. I don't want it costing people more in petrol to look for the cash than the actual cash stash.

"It's about getting out and seeing what is around our city and creating a buzz," Harry said.

"The next one will be good."

A Westpac bank account had been opened for people to make donations and local businesses had also offered to donate vouchers in place of cash.
