Northlanders might have a chance to go for a swim on Christmas Day.

Northlanders might have a chance to go for a swim on Christmas Day.

Brollies could be the order of the morning in Northland on Christmas Day, with showers forecast across the region, but the sunblock and togs can come out later as things are expected to get much better in the afternoon.

MetService media and communications meteorologist Daniel Corbett said Wednesday should start of with showers across Northland, particularly in the west, before the sun comes out and the temperature rises to between 22C-24C later.

There are likely to be a few showers across the region early on Boxing Day before Northland becomes one of the places to be on the day, along with Hawkes Bay and the West Coast, who will all get great weather with a high of 23C-25C.

"On Christmas Day (in Northland) there will be a bit of a damp start, especially in the west, while Whangarei, Kerikeri and the Bay of Islands will have a bit of rain to start with too, before thinks improve as the day progresses," Mr Corbett said.

"So there will still be some great Christmas Day weather up there and plenty of time for the beach, with things overall being pretty good for the day."

A new weather pattern is heading this way from Australia meaning the New Year's Eve/Day weather is harder to predict at this stage and while it's expected to be relatively fine in Northland for the next statutory holidays, an update will be made later in the week.
