Charity provides another $25,000

Northland cancer charity Project Promise has received a second $25,000 boost from Northlink Health.

Northlink's first donation was made in July.

A grateful Northland Community Foundation manager Liz Woodward said,

"We're so proud to have them on board. In less than four months Northlink Health has donated $50,000 to the project. It's amazing to see the fundraising total go up in leaps and bounds with support like this."

Northlink Health general manager Pete Carter said as a charitable organisation it wanted to give back. "We see Project Promise as a great way to show our support to Northland," he said.

Northlink Health offers home support services throughout the region stretching from Auckland's Harbour Bridge to North Cape. Because the organisation was not for profit, Mr Carter said, each year money was given back to the community. "Sadly, cancer touches all parts of our community. After our initial donation in July we felt that we could do more and so we decided to match it." Northland Community Foundation-backed Project Promise is a drive to raise funds for a cancer treatment centre for Northland, in partnership with the Northland District Health Board. Project Promise has raised $1.5million. The planned unit will provide date-stay treatment for cancer patients, including consultations, chemotherapy treatments and follow-up from medical experts and other related nursing and support services.

Adults who need radiation treatment or with complex cases requiring specialist care will still go to Auckland and children may still receive some treatment at Starship hospital, which has a specialised child cancer unit.
