Bream Bay swimmers at National Short Course champs Bream Bay swimmers Paul Linton, 18 and Rebecca Reade, 16, took on the top swimmers in the country at last week's New Zealand Short Course Swimming Championships in Auckland.

Paul swam in four events, setting personal best times in 50m, 100m and 200mbackstroke. He also swam 50m fly, placing 14th in his age group. He was sixth in his age group with his 50m backstroke time of 26.91s a new Northland Short Course age group and open time and placed 17th in the evening open finals session. He was ninth in both 100m and 200m backstroke in his age group and made the open finals sessions for both swims. Reade swam 200m backstroke, placing 13th in the 16-year women's age group.
Fundraiser for multi-activity facility Ruakākā Recreation Centre's Masquerade Party last Saturday was a great event, says organiser and centre secretary Christine Thirling.

The night was a fundraiser for the planned Ruakākā multi-activity facility. The crowd of partygoers were entertained by Pablo and The Playbacks band, along with a music quiz.
"Nadya Worthy and her friends gave a performance of Cardio Drumming and everyone was encouraged to join them," said Thirling. "We also had great prizes, every ticket had a chance to win a prize".
Sponsors included Orr's Pharmacy, Bream Bay Merchants, Porthouse, Ruakākā Tavern, Marsden Highway Liquor Spot, Two Birds Cafe, Northland Steel Products and Marsden Print.
Brynderwyn forest adventure The Waipu Cycle and Walkway Trust is holding a fund-raising forest adventure, exploring the Brynderwyn hills and forest either by cycling or walking, on October 28. Cyclists will need a gravel-ready bike to manage the forestry roads, and e-bikes are welcome.
Organisers say it is not a race but an opportunity to explore the Brynderwyn forest tracks and enjoy the spectacular views now that the forest has been logged and a chance to get out somewhere different with family and friends.
The tracks are hilly and require a moderate level of skill on a bike. Routes vary from 10-20kms (20km is a double loop) for the bike, and 5-10km for the walk. There will also be a 2km bike ride for children followed by games. The event will start at 10am from the top of Massey Rd (right at the top) and the event will be signposted from Waipu.
Parking is available up Massey Rd. Registration is 9am for cyclists and 9.30am for walkers. Entry is cash only ($30 per family or $15 per individual). Devonshire tea/coffee will be provided on site after the event. The yellow bike raffle (bike donated by Ray White Real Estate) will be drawn at the beginning of the event. Social beach volleyball in Ruakākā A beach volleyball social league starts on Ruakākā Beach (Mair Rd access) on October 25 and will run on Thursday evenings for 16 weeks, with a break over Christmas.
Teams can be any number, but only four players can be on the court at a time. Cost is $40 per team per week and registrations close on October 19 (teams must be registered to play). Lions beach walk Around 75 people turned out for the Waipu Lions 10/10/10 charity walk and run along Waipu Cove beach, raising just over $1000 for the Lion Mobility Foundation. All proceeds go towards helping children with disabilities into walking equipment.
Bream Bay cricket win Bream Bay's men's cricket team's season got off to a good start with a convincing win against Kamo on Saturday.

Bream Bay put 184 runs on the board and bowled Kamo out for 83. Top scorer was John Cunningham with 56.

Weed group takes action Newly formed Weed Action Piroa-Brynderwyns wants people to learn about weeds invading our forests, farmlands, foreshores and reserves and how to control them.
Weed Action works with the Northern Regional Council, and Piroa-Brynderwyns Landcare - a collective of more than a dozen community-led conservation projects - to restore biodiversity in and around the Brynderwyn Hills range.
Weed Action PB aims to raise awareness within the community about the existence of weeds, how to recognise them, and the threats they pose; and provide information, tools and products to make control easier. They are seeking a local co-ordinator to support community effort - anyone interested in this role can email group chair gill.webb@activeplus.co.nz or call Gill on 021 623 811.
