Fine weather and two big events brought crowds flocking to Waipu for a big weekend.

First up was the Waipu Easter Carnival, which after nine years has grown to a massive event attracting about 10,000 people.

Parking was at a premium, with all the paddocks opened for parking filled with cars as families enjoyed the rides, entertainment and food.

On Sunday the clear weather continued, to the relief of organisers on their second attempt at hosting the Great Waipu Car and Bike Show after it was rained off in March.

About 600 cars were on display, up from 450 last year, along with 130 motorbikes, brought from as far away as Wellington and Kaitaia.

Eventful month for Waipu Golf Club
April will be a busy month at Waipu Golf Club, recently named as the Travel and Hospitality Awards winner of Golf Club of the Year for Northland.

On April 20, the club hosts the Top of the Harbour Junior Open, an annual event for under-18 golfers of all ability levels. You do not need to be a golf club member to enter.

Entry forms are available from the club or at www.waipugolf.org.nz.

The following day is the club's 84th anniversary mixed open tournament, tee-off 9am. Entries are available at the golf shop, or for more information, check the club website.

A golf taster for women 10am–2pm on April 29 is the next event. You don't need to have golf experience to enter the Bubbles and Bash Partee, but experienced golfers are welcome to come along.

Get some friends together, wear comfortable clothes and flat shoes for playing. For $10 you'll get a glass of bubbles, coaching, play a few holes and have a hit on the driving range, a platter lunch and a glimpse of golf wear fashion. Register with the golf shop or check out the website.

Crazy hat party
Create a crazy hat for Ruakaka Recreation Centre's latest fundraiser – a Crazy Hat Party on April 28, 7pm to midnight at the recreation centre, with live music, finger food, prizes and a cash bar, with a courtesy van available.

Tickets are $25 and cover the cost of food and live music – you can buy them from the recreation centre by emailing ruakakarec@xtra.co.nz or phone 432 7962.

The event is a fundraiser towards a new multiactivity centre. The centre is also looking for volunteers to paint the external walls of the centre during the next four weeks. If you're not afraid of heights and can donate a few hours, call the recreation centre on the number above.
