It was the second water death in Northland on Christmas Day, after a crabber was found dead at Uretiti Beach, south of Whangārei, about 10.10am that day. The crabber's name has yet to be released by police.
The beach, 6km north of Waipū, is unpatrolled and has a grim history of crab fisher deaths.
Police have yet to release the name of the woman who died when a boat flipped at Houhora on Boxing Day.
The woman, in her 60s, died at the scene at Houhora Harbour's east beach, while two others received minor injuries, police said. Emergency services were called to the incident at 11.15am.
Police said the woman's next of kin had been notified and the death would be referred to the coroner.
