A car floating in the Hatea River looked more like a submarine than a motor vehicle yesterday.
The car with orange tape around the roof was visible in the tide about 8m off the bank on Hatea Dr.
There was not much police and Fire and Emergency workers could do once it was established the driver had managed to get out of the vehicle and was not injured.
It's believed the driver was distracted and went off the road into the water. Members of the public were quick to contact police after they spotted the car in the river on their way to work about 8.45am and the calls continued throughout the day.
Police said owners had organised a tow for the vehicle which would probably be done closer to low tide.
