One of three code of conduct complaints levelled at a Whangārei district councillor has been upheld by her fellow councillors.
In a split vote, councillors opted not to impose any penalty on Councillor Shelley Deeming for the breach. Some felt having the breach alongside her name was enough of a penalty, others cited the passage of time, the stress and anxiety she had endured, the fact councillors had under gone privacy training and that the matter had been heard by other authorities.
The Human Rights Review Tribunal ordered the Whangārei District Council to pay Wayne Deeming $2000 plus expenses in 2015 for humiliation, loss of dignity and injury to feelings after it was made public that he had complained about an incident at the Mid-Western Rugby and Squash Club on August 8, 2009, that he felt may have breached the Sale of Liquor Act.
Cr Deeming faced a three-part code of conduct hearing in the council chambers yesterday, relating to a historical matter dating back to 2009 between her and Mr Deeming, a cousin by marriage.
Mr Deeming alleged Cr Deeming breached the councillor's code of conduct via three separate acts.
