Man's remains in bush
Police were last night working to recover a body from a remote area of bush and scrub near Waima Valley in South Hokianga.
A specialist Search and Rescue team from Whangarei and Far North Land SAR volunteers were dispatched about 3.30pm yesterday to help recover the remains from an area accessible only on foot.
It is believed the man's body has been there for some time. No information about the man's identity or cause of death was available at edition time yesterday.
Rebuilt college to be opened
The $14 million rebuild of Northland College in Kaikohe will be formally opened on July 7 by Associate Education Minister Louise Upston.
The blessing ceremony, including unveiling and naming, will begin at 5am and run until about 8am. That will be followed by the official opening from 10.30am to noon.
Once the new buildings are open the old school, with the exception of the administration block and the pool, will be demolished.
The Government committed to a total rebuild of the college after controversy in 2015 over the state of the school, which was claimed at the time to have "the worst classrooms in New Zealand".
Car and truck collide
A car and a truck have collided at a notorious intersection where the NZ Transport Agency is considering installing a roundabout.
The smash occurred just after 6pm on Tuesday and involved a car and gas bottle delivery truck at the junction of State Highway 10 and Waipapa Rd.
St John Ambulance and two crews from the Kerikeri Fire Brigade responded but no one was injured. NZTA contractors cleared the road of debris and mopped up spilt engine fluids.
Fight venue correction
A story on June 8 incorrectly named the venue of an upcoming fight night as the Portland Rugby league club.
The venue is the Portland Recreation Centre, and Rugby League Northland wish to clarify that neither it nor the Portland Rugby League Club are involved with organising the event.
The Northern Advocate was incorrectly advised of the fight night venue and apologises for the misinformation.
