Between them they have helped nurse thousands of people back to health.
This week Whangarei Hospital's 120 volunteers were acknowledged by the Northland District Health Board for the crucial role they play, supporting staff and ensuring patients are taken care of.
Three volunteers were honoured for 30 years of service in the ceremony at the Kamo Club.
Crystabel Johns, 72, Daphne Griffin, 78, and Grace Skullan, 83, all give their time by volunteering at the physiotherapy pool.
Mrs Griffin said she was honoured to be acknowledged and did not expect "the fuss".
"I just do it," she said.
"It's very rewarding.
"You can see it really helps people."
The hospital's volunteer co-ordinator, Rose Armstrong, said:
"They are amazing.
"It's such a sterling effort."
She said the volunteers played a pivotal role in the hospital.
"I don't know what they will be doing at the hospital today ... when they're not there, they are really missed," she added.
The hospital volunteers meet and greet patients, drive the shuttle buses, work in the library, run the snack trolley, make sure the flowers are watered as well as doing numerous other jobs to keep the hospital ticking.
"It's absolutely fantastic.
"It's such dedication.
"They are so committed, every single one of them," Ms Armstrong said.
