A police cordon was put in place after a man was seen firing an air pistol in the park behind Whangarei Library.

A woman notified the police about the man's behaviour at about 12.45pm today .

She reported the man fired some shots in the park then walked off toward the central business district.

Police did not find the man despite a high police presence, including armed officers, at the cordon in place at Forum North, the library and access points to the Rose Garden on Water St.

He was described as Maori, of average height and build, wearing sunglasses, a long sleeved striped top, and carrying what appeared to be a small, black air pistol.
