Wooden you know it - the person who ploughed this car into a Whangarei timber yard not only survived but managed to climb out and do a runner.
How anyone even walked away from the crash has BBS Timbers staff and the police stumped.
The crash happened around 2am on Sunday. As
well as rendering the car almost unrecognisable, it destroyed tens of thousands of dollars worth of timber, sales manager John Sheridan said.
After flattening a fence, the car demolished three packets of timber and shifted another two. Tyre tracks show the car missed a powerpole by about 8mm.
It obviously left Kioreroa Rd at speed and out of control before ploughing across the grass berm, smashing through the fence and becoming wedged under a stack of timber, Mr Sheridan said.
He believed the police "had a name in the frame".
Whangarei police spokeswoman Sarah Kennett said officers believed two drivers were racing each other before one ended up in the timber yard.
"We understand the male driver of that vehicle was injured and lucky to get out alive," Mrs Kennett said.
Police are speaking to witnesses to find out who was driving the other vehicle. Any charges would be considered once both drivers were spoken to, she said.
