One person has died following a workplace incident in Whangārei that was initially reported to emergency services as a crash involving a truck.

Hato Hone St John was called to Abbey Caves Rd at 12.48pm after receiving an initial report of a motor vehicle crash.

Police have since confirmed a person has died in what they said was a workplace incident.

The Serious Crash Unit was at the scene investigating and WorkSafe had been advised about the incident.

The Advocate understands road workers were working in the area where the reported crash took place. However, no details about the workplace involved were released.

Two ambulances and a rapid response vehicle responded to the callout, as did firefighters from Whangārei.

Cordons were put in place along Abbey Caves Rd, preventing traffic from passing through the area.

Police said the death will be referred to the Coroner.
