There aren't enough hours in the day for 91-year-old artist Brydon Crawford.
In between commissions the veteran carver, sculptor and painter has thrown his weight behind the Hundertwasser Art Centre project, producing a series of sculptures of Friedensreich Hundertwasser himself.
"This particular project was encouraging the Hundertwasser Art Centre," Whangarei'sMr Crawford said. "I see it as a good addition to Whangarei, I think it will add a lot of colour to the town."
Worked from a photograph of the artist, Mr Crawford created a clay model, made a mould, then produced two resin "masks" which he painted, and one in copper.
Mr Crawford graduated from the University of Auckland's Elam School of Fine Arts in the 1950s, but headed north 37 years ago "to get away from the rat race".
"I keep busy, I'm always doing something and there's not enough hours in the day," Mr Crawford, who turns 92 in December, said.
Mr Crawford was working with the Hundertwasser project action team and was planning on selling his pieces, with a portion of the proceeds going to support the project.
The volunteer team working to get the centre built needed to raise another $3.25 million by June next year to see the project proceed, as per a council directive. They had raised almost $13 million so far. See yeswhangarei.co.nz.
