A dip in the therapeutic waters of the Ngawha Springs hot pools could be a perfect way for PM Jacinda Ardern to relax on her five-day visit to the Bay of Islands

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern will spend an unprecedented five days in the Bay of Islands for Waitangi Day commemorations next month. We're pretty sure she'll have plenty of official duties to keep her occupied, but we thought we'd suggest five great things to do in the Bay if she gets some spare time.

Take a dip at Ngawha Springs:
Relax in the therapeutic waters of the hot pools at Ngawha Springs. The pools are uniquely Northland without the glitz and glamour of some other thermal pools around the country.

Go on the Cream Trip:
FullersGreatSights still follows the original Cream Trip route, delivering mail and supplies to island residents and showing the best of the Bay on a relaxed day-long cruise.

Spend a penny in the Hundertwasser Toilets, Kawakawa:
The main tourist attraction in Kawakawa is the colourful public toilet designed by Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

Take a ride on the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway:
The Bay of Islands Vintage Railway is running four daily trains, whatever the weather, until Waitangi Day. It is the only working railway in New Zealand where the trains travel down a State Highway and right through the middle of a town.

Take the Russell Mini Tour:
Tour this tranquil town once called the "Hell hole of the Pacific" and what was New Zealand's first capital, then known as Kororareka.

And for her partner Clarke Gayford:
Gayford is a keen fisherman and when she announced her pregnancy Ms Ardern said Gayford will be "first man of fishing" and stay-at-home dad. What better way for him to unwind ahead of the big day than spending a few days fishing in the Bay.
