A 13-year-old boy has died in a quad bike accident at Matawaia, 25km southwest of Kaikohe. Emergency services were alerted to the accident about 4.15pm on Sunday but he died at the scene.

The accident occurred in bush only a few metres from the road. Police say the boy was trapped under the bike after it flipped.

Sunday's death is the latest in a series of quad bike tragedies in recent years. In 2015 a 14-year-old Whangarei Boys High student died when the bike he was riding to fetch the cows for milking on a farm south of Kaikohe rolled into a ditch, trapping him underneath.
