During the past few seasons family names have dominated the trophy list at the Waipu Boat and Fishing Club prize-giving events.

Club spokesman Ash Russell said that the Bridger family had won frequently, but now the Ryan and Were families are pushing the Bridges for top "fisho" status.

"You don't have to own a boat to feature on the prize list either. Some of the biggest fish caught for the year were caught land- based," Ash said.

At the prizegiving, guest speaker, world yachtsman Ross Fields will share stories about his sailing adventures with Sir Peter Blake. A sheep on the spit will be served for dinner and there is a dessert competition will be held for those with sweet tooth. Bring along your signature dessert dish for judging.

There will be a charge of $10 per head for the meal. All intending members are welcome to the Waipu Boat and Fishing Club prize-giving on Saturday, August 4 at the clubrooms. The bar opens at 6pm.

Creative arts

Last year the Excellence in Business Awards introduced a category for "Creative Arts" with criteria set for artists and arts organisations. Entries are now open.

Whether you are an artist, actor, theatre group or lighting designer, reasons to enter include energising and motivating your team for the future, highlighting your success to current and potential audiences, adding value to your strategic and business planning, getting a free and independent perspective of your strengths and weaknesses and the possibility of receiving a media prize valued at more than $6500 to promote your business.

"It is an absolutely easy-peasy process, the form is extremely simple to fill in and will take all of a couple of minutes. It would be great to have a good arts contingent represented this year," said Sarah Boon, from the Arts Promotion Trust.

The Business Excellence Awards run regionally and in Whangarei are supported by a partnership between Westpac and the Chamber of Commerce to celebrate the contribution of local business to the regional and national business environment. For more information, see northlandbusinessawards.co.nz/ award-categories/creative-arts/.

Westpac New Zealand's webpage says the real reward for entering is the process involved.

These awards give companies the opportunity to focus on their business by identifying the opportunities as well as strengths and challenges and finding ways to build on them and keep a competitive edge.

There are 18 categories.

The deadline for applications is August 16.

For more information on the event, categories and on workshops available to help (on Tuesday, July 31, and Tuesday, August 7, in Whangarei) contact the Chamber of Commerce at the Old Library, 7 Rust Ave, Whangarei, during business hours Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm or by email at awards@northchamber.co.nz.

Help wanted

About 100 people turned up to last week's planning meeting for the January 2013 production of the Grand Pageant of Waipu and all were keen to be involved.

Production director Lachie McLean said the Pageant will tell the migration story through a typical family using their personal circumstances to reveal the emotions and humour with the aim of bringing the historical facts to life.

"This year's version will be similar to the 2003 production with three stories again.

"We begin with Waipu from the arrival of the settlers through to 1985, a short pre-European history of Waipu and then we tell the migration story," Lachie said.

The message at the meeting was that for this large venture to succeed it has to be that the people of Waipu are telling the world their story.

Auditions for local actors will be held for the acting sections.

A group of women for the Gaelic walking songs are needed as well as a core of locals to be in the crowd scenes to portray the ordinary folk who were caught up in the circumstances of those times.

Acting experience is unnecessary and there will be parts for children.

Rehearsals for these people will start at the beginning of October.

To add to the grandeur of the e production and make it truly the people of Waipu, there will also be crowd scenes and these extras will only be required for a couple of rehearsals as well as the two performances. This lets more people take part in some way and support this mammoth local under taking.

For more information or to be involved, please contact the Waipu Museum at (09) 432-0746.
