1. Lunges
Lunges are often cited by trainers as the key to toned legs and bums. Walking lunges are extra effective for whittling thighs into great shape.
Stand upright with a full water bottle or weight in each hand.
Lunge forward with one foot, not letting your knee go further forward than in
line with your toes.
When you are at the bottom of the lunge, push off from your back foot so you get back into the standing position.
Step forward into another lunge with the opposite foot in front.
Repeat this motion to walk across your living room and back 10 times.
2. Calf raises
These can be done anywhere, any time: while you're waiting for the jug to boil or standing at work.
In bare feet, raise yourself off the floor, with the weight on the balls of your feet.
Steady yourself by holding on to something if you need to. Slowly lower yourself until your feet are flat on the floor.
Repeat five or 10 times whenever you get a minute.
3. Squats
Squats work your hips, thighs and butt. It is vital that they are done properly to avoid injury.
Stand just in front of a chair with your feet hip-width apart.
Tense your abs and hold them tight as you squat as if you were going to sit on the chair.
Keep your knees in line with your toes as you descend towards the chair. Make sure they do not turn inwards.
Hover just above the chair, then tense your glutes to lift back up.
Lift until you are almost in the standing position, then descend again.
Do three sets of 10 repetitions.
4. Fake tan
Instantly slimming and imperfection-covering, fake tan can hide a catalogue of problems. The key is to get it to go on without streaking, so that you don't end up with something else you need to hide. There are lots of options: sprays, mousses, lotions and wipes. Choose whichever you are most comfortable applying - they all give a similar result.
Exfoliate before you apply the tan to remove rough patches of skin. Dry off thoroughly. Put some moisturiser on your knees and elbows to stop them absorbing too much colour.
Pull your hair back before you apply any on your face. Mix the tan with moisturiser - your face should only end up one shade darker than it naturally is. For the rest of your body, shave beforehand and put Vaseline on your cuticles and nails to stop staining. Put the tanner on one limb at a time, starting with your legs. First do your shin and calf, then run it down over your ankle and foot. Then do your thigh, putting any left over on your knee. Do your arms next and finish with your torso. Wait 10 minutes before dressing. Toothpaste can be used to get rid of tan that ends up in the wrong place.
5. High heels
Nothing makes as immediate a difference to the look of your legs as stiletto heels. Go for a heel height you can walk in - stumbling isn't sexy. Wedges and heels with a platform under the toe, reducing the difference between ball and heel height, are the easiest to get around in. Go for styles without an ankle strap and in skin colours to give legs the impression of extra length. Pointed toes also make legs seem longer.
6. Wear the right clothes
Use some visual trickery to make your legs seem longer. An unbroken line will make your legs look like they stretch on further than they really do: wear a top and skirt of the same colour or match your stockings and shoes. Wear lots of vertical lines - pinstripes especially give the impression of being taller and thinner. Once you've got legs that are begging to be shown off, remember the old rule: expose your legs or your cleavage, but not both.
7. Wax
Give yourself a confidence boost with smooth, hairless legs. Waxing is reasonably easy to do at home. Hair needs to be a couple of centimetres long in order to be removed properly. Dust talcum powder over your legs first - this helps the wax stick to the hair. Press the wax strip down firmly in the direction your hair grows. Then rip it off in the opposite direction.
Waxing hurts less if you can keep the strip as close to the skin as possible as you remove it. If you end up with any sticky patches, get rid of them with baby oil.
8. Bust cellulite
Cellulite adorns even some of the world's skinniest thighs and is estimated to affect as many as 90 per cent of women. It is normal fat that is pushing through the connective tissue under the surface of your skin. Coffee grounds can make cellulite less obvious temporarily, allegedly because of the caffeine content. Warm them and then rub them on the orange-peely skin. Wrap yourself in plastic wrap and leave for 15 minutes. Wash the grounds off and moisturise with a skin-firming lotion.
