OPINION

Christmas is a special time of year – a chance to pause within the busyness of life and spend time with the people who mean the most to us.

In Tararua, Central Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa, there’s something truly magical about celebrating Christmas in the warmth of summer.

Long, golden days offer us the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and reflect on the natural beauty of the regions.

This year, my travels have taken me across our electorate, racking up over 40,000 kilometres in my trusty car.

From the southernmost tip to the northern reaches of Central Hawke’s Bay and Tararua, I’ve been fortunate to visit communities big and small.

Our electorate may be provincial and circa 12,000 square kilometres top to bottom, but it’s rich with diversity – each area has its own unique challenges and opportunities which make it special.

As I write this, Parliament is in scrutiny week, a time dedicated to evaluating the performance of Government entities.

It’s a chance to see what has been achieved with taxpayer dollars and assess the real-world impacts of Government programmes.

Reflecting on this work, and on the year that’s been, I’ve thought a lot about my journey as the MP for Wairarapa.

Over this past year, I’ve visited schools, met with individuals to hear their concerns, attended public meetings, and celebrated wonderful community events and people achieving great things.

These moments of connection have given me valuable insights into the lives of the people I represent. It’s understanding those at the coalface that shapes how I advocate for the Wairarapa electorate in Wellington.

This year, my colleagues and I have worked hard to deliver meaningful results.

We’ve seen record investments in healthcare to improve access to medicines and treatments, alongside increased support for our schools and teachers to help every student succeed.

Across agriculture, housing, transport, and climate change, we’re focused on sustainable, economically viable and future-proofed solutions that empower our communities.

There’s plenty still to do, but we’re getting back on track.

Looking ahead, I remain committed to advocating for the issues that matter most to you – whether it’s strengthening our local economy, ensuring better access to services, or protecting the natural beauty of our region.

I am here to champion the needs and aspirations of all who call Tararua, Central Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa home.

As we wrap up 2024, I feel more determined than ever to see our region thrive. I’m proud of the progress we’ve made and excited for what lies ahead.

I wish each of you a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

I encourage you to take the time to celebrate your successes and the people who’ve supported you along the way.

And to those working through the holiday season to keep us safe, fed, and healthy – thank you. Your dedication is deeply appreciated.

Here’s to a thriving 2025.
