Misfits 3 Stop Out 0

Rose Morton received a perfect belated 13th birthday present yesterday.

In her first senior women's soccer game, the Tikokino School Year 8 student who celebrated her birthday on Thursday scored a goal for the Maycenvale Misfits as they beat Stop Out of Wellington 3-0 in an ASB Bank Women's Knockout Cup qualifier at St Leonard's Park, Hastings.

Morton took the field as a substitute left wing 22 minutes into the second half and impressed with her speed. Her older sister, striker Sarah Morton, was unable to play because of an injury.

Asked if the goal was for her sister, Morton - the "baby" of the Misfits squad - replied with a huge grin: "That was for me because I don't score too many."

A former Napier City Rovers open grade player, Morton will attend Hastings Girls' High School next year. She aims to make Football Ferns squads in the future.

Maycenvale had eight shots on goal in the first half. But their only goal was a 25th minute own goal from a deflection by Stop Out defender Kathryn Burt following the Misifits' only corner of the half. Although the hosts had anther eight shots on goal in the second half it wasn't until the final six minutes that they scored.

Charging Stop Out keeper Kath McGuinness surprisingly miskicked clearing a freekick from midfielder Rebecca Brown for the second goal, two minutes before Morton's one.

Stop Out coach Elliott Taylor agreed his troops had enough possession, territory and shots on goal to win. The visitors had 14 shots on goal, eight of them in the second half, and 11 corners, seven more than the Misfits.

"We didn't take our chances. We should have won ... that's the flattest we've played all year and the fact we left Wellington at 7am this morning was a factor," Taylor said.

His team couldn't travel on Saturday because several of them were working. Stop Out relied too much on a kick-and-chase approach and the Misfits got sucked into this style of play for long periods too. The Misfits will have to be more constructive and more assertive close to the net if they are going to be competitive in their next game.

Captain Melanie MacDougall and Melissa Adams were the best of the Stop Out players.
