At this year's Hawke's Bay Secondary schools sports awards, the Napier Boys' High School road race and cross-country team of Daniel Wallis, Stefan Smith and Steven Smith took out the top award for team of the year.
It had been three years of waiting for the team who are three-time national
road race champions, as well as winners of bronze in the cross-country championships in Dunedin this year.
This year's victory at the Wanganui round-the-lake relay was also the third year running the team had claimed victory. This followed the team's gold in the super 8 crosscountry championships along with clean sweeps in the East Coast North Island Road Race and Crosscountry championships.
The three young men have proven their status as by far Napier Boys' an Hawke's Bay's most successful team with not only dominance locally, but nationally for the past three years.
Together they were the youngest senior boys' medal winners at the cross-country championships in Dunedin this year, with Daniel and Stefan both in the sixth form, while Steven is in fifth form. This places them as top contenders for gold next year.
In December the team travel to Hamilton for the National Road Race an athletics aiming to take their fourth consecutive road title while Daniel and Stefan will also compete on the track.
