Hawke's Bay's Ashlea Quirk won one of three rower of the day awards at the three-day Lake Karapiro regatta over the weekend.
"Considering there were 2038 rowers, including some from Australia and Vanuatu, it was an amazing feat for Ashlea. The award was chosen by marshalls and officials and it
recognised the fact Ashlea made four finals on one day," said Hawke's Bay Rowing Club's club captain Ross Webb.
Napier Girls High School's Quirk won the under-17 girls single B final on the same day she made the under-17 double final, under-17 eight final and the women's club four final. Webb pointed out Quirk could easily have made the A single final had she not rowed in so many events and her time recorded in the B final would have placed her third in the A final. Webb said all 56 Bay rowers who attended the regatta made at least one final.
"To do this they had to finish first or second in their heats so making finals was an outstanding achievement."
Another of the Bay's highlights was Mike Harrison winning the men's senior single final. Webb was just as thrilled when he saw promising 18-year-old Michael van Der Peet finish fourth in the same race.
