It was a case of the day's the winner for Takapau's Christine Marsh.
Marsh, a nine handicapper from Takapau Golf Club, was back at the Hawke's Bay Golf Clubrooms by 5pm after a scorching day yesterday in the Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay Women's Golf Association Champion-of-Champions Tournament.
The meatworker from Bernard Matthews
had carded 86 in her first 18-hole round but improved that by five shots in the second 18 in the afternoon.
"As the day warmed up, my game started to improve," she said of the strokeplay tournament that also had a gross stableford rosebowl section.
Marsh, who has been playing for almost 30 years and has had a handicap as low as six, took up the game because her father, William Fort, and mother, Doreen, of Matamata, in Waikato, were keen golfers.
"So, both my younger brother, Harry, and I started playing it, too."
She credits her husband, Dave Marsh, who is a quality auditor at the meatworks, for her improvement.
"He's just a fantastic coach," said Marsh, who represented Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay in the Interprovincials in Dunedin in 2000.
So how did she fare there?
"Oh, we struggled. It was really tough but also enjoyable and a great experience."
Napier Golf Club's Bay No 1, Linda Akers, predictably was the senior champion with 153, while Kathy Olsen (162) was runner-up. Akers also led Napier to the Rosebowl victory with Kay Hunia and Dianne Scott.
The nett winner was Waipawa's Sheree Jones (139), with Mahia's Trenna Smith (148) second. Patutuhi's Justine Skudder (178) won the intermediate gross and nett events.
