Last year's Chatham Cup finalists Napier City Rovers inflicted an 11-0 flogging on Massey University in Napier today.

The Conroy Removals-sponsored Blues used the visitors goalmouth as a dart board at the Bluewater Stadium, Park Island.

On another sublime breathless winter's day, the Finlay Milne-skippered hosts are showing why the students belong in the lecture theatres and tutorial rooms rather than the national knockout cup cup football cauldron after posting a 4-0 halftime lead.

The scoreline exposes the gulf between the Lotto Central League campaigners and the visiting seventh-placed Lotto Federation League outfit.

Josh Stevenson got in the act in the 14th minute for a 1-0 lead after pouncing on a Saul Halpin drive from the inside edge of the box but Massey goalkeeper Nino DeGregorio made a gallant dive to parry it but couldn't bring it under control.

It was Halpin's turn in the 27th minute when he drove a ball from about 8m in front of the goalmouth from an oblique angle but keeper DeGregorio's outstretched hand palmed the ball into the net for a 2-0 buffer.

The 3-0 lead came in the 32nd minute after Halpin, Fergus Neil and Tom Biss putting together a few deft touches to gift Stevenson another tap-in goal.

Player/coach Bill Robertson joined the party with a toe-turning goal, 4-0, after midfielder Ross Willox took a one-touch pass into the box for Biss to turn it across from near midway of the goal line for the centreback to help the ball into the gaping net as he fell.

Although some people questioned whether there was a hint of offside in the goal there was no disputing the Rovers' supremacy considering at least three other scoring opportunities went begging.

In the second half, it took only seven minutes for the hosts to get on the scoreboard, Robertson this time nodding a ball into the net on the farpost from a well-judged Neil cross near the goal line, 5-0.

In the 59th minute, Stevenson claimed his hattrick 6-0 after substitute striker Angus Kilkolly fed him the ball inside the box for a crisp wormburner as assistant coach Chris Greatholder substiuted him with centreback Danny Wilson, who used to be a striker in the Bay premiership several years ago.

In the 71st minute it was 7-0, Neil followed up from the right flank to deposit the ball into net after keeper DeGregorio parried a low drive from Kilkolly but again the ball didn't stick.

Kilkolly got on referee Andy Parker's card in the 83rd minute, driving the ball from just inside the box to make it 8-0.

Player/coach Nicholas Daly could stand it no more as he ran on to the field for centreback James Gray but substitute Ryan Tinsley casually popped in a goal in the 87th and two minutes later Biss also slipped in his calling card below the keeper to make it 10-0.

But the Rovers weren't done, this time Wilson driving a left footer to make it 11-0.
