Athletics: Squad makes big impact at meeting

At the recent championship, the East Coast North Island team performed superbly in adverse conditions for some athletes.

The highlight of the weekend in Masterton was Bradley Christison (NBHS) winning the junior boys' 3000m in a record time of 9.25.97m.

Georgia Hulls (HNHS) was also a standout performer winning the junior girls' 100m and 200m.

She was ably supported in the grade by Briana Stephenson (NGHS) who won the junior girls' high jump, was second in the long jump, third in the 100m and fourth in the 200m.

Along with Georgia Rathbone they ran a superb 4x100m relay and finished in second place.

Holly Manning (NGHS) was a clear winner of the senior girls' 800m and finished a close second in the 400m event.

Christian Leopard (NBHS) ran a superb race in the intermediate boys' 3000m to finish runner-up.

Mason Emerson in the senior boys' long jump was also runner-up in a tight finish.

Damien Scott (St John's) and Anneke Smith (Hastings GHS) were third in the open boys' 300m hurdles and senior girls' 1500m, respectively.

Callum Hardie was second in the senior boys' javelin and 4th in the shotput.

The intermediate girls, intermediate boys and senior boys' 4x100m teams all finished third while the junior girls were second.

The girls' captain, Smith, and the boys' one, Oliver Penno, were a credit to the team.

Managers Sheila Smidt and Murray Smith were impressed with the standard of the team's performances and their impeccable behaviour.
