A 23-year-old man who was assaulted at a Hawke's Bay holiday park was stabbed with a knife, police confirmed today.

The man is still in hospital recovering from serious injuries after the assault at Hastings TOP 10 Holiday Park early Sunday morning.

After the assault, the alleged offender fled in the victim's grey Toyota Surf 4x4.

The vehicle was dumped near the intersection of Albert St and Park Rd in north Hastings about 8am on Sunday.

The knife has not been recovered.

Police asked residents in the area to check their properties for foreign items.

A staff member at the holiday park told the Herald she was unsure whether it was a guest or one of their friends who were injured.

The room was booked as having four people stay in it, she said, but they had invited friends over at some stage.
