Work under way to repair slip on Riverdale Rd caused by storm

The edge of Riverdale Road is undercut by a raging Mangatera Stream Wednesday afternoon.

Work has started on Riverdale Rd, between George St and Tipapakuku Rd near Dannevirke, to repair the large dropout (or under slip) caused by April's tropical cyclones.

Since the dropout the road has been reduced to one-way past the slip, and restricted to light vehicles only.

However, it has recently had to be closed due to the theft and vandalism of signs and temporary traffic lights used to ensure people's safety.

Drone surveying, geotechnical investigations, engineered design and building consenting processes have been completed and construction of the large retaining wall has begun, with the Tararua Alliance engaging local firm Morris & Bailey to complete the work. This includes manufacturing the large concrete L-units which will be used to support the road.

The work will involve excavating the majority of the affected lane, construction of a concrete foundation, installation of the 2.5m high reinforced concrete L-units, backfilling and compacting to road level including four layers of geogrid reinforcing, construction of the pavement and surface, and installation of drainage assets and traffic services, including a guardrail beside the road.

Riverdale Rd will remain closed at the dropout until the project has been completed, which is planned to be finished by Christmas.

Tararua Alliance is urging patience while this project is carried out.
