The Magpies are swapping their boots for gummies, dress shoes and Timberlands today as they experience a hard day's work.

The "job swap" is run by the Hawke's Bay Rugby Union and tries to get players to think about life after footy and provide them with some valuable tools to progress this further.

The initiative is a first for New Zealand rugby.

It is the brainchild of Magpies personal development manager Aayden Clarke who, as a former player, understands the need for planning life after footy.

The players will experience a range of jobs.

"From construction to nursing, waiting and real estate, the whole squad will be involved in the day."

"It will give a real taste of what a hard day's work looks like, as most of them have been professional rugby players since school."

In a few weeks' time the roles will reverse as a number of Bay employees will experience a day in the life of a professional rugby player.

"They will be put through some light gym work, strategies for game time and attend a training.

"We want to replicate it as much as possible but, obviously, within physical limitations."

Mr Clarke said "the boys" were really excited about it.

Zac Guildford will join Atkin Construction for the day, Ihaia West will be at Te Puni Kokiri and Ash Dixon will try his hand at winemaking at Brookfields Winery. Trent Boswell-Wakefield will be at Napier Pak'n Save while Mark Abbott will be at Fernware and Ryan Tongia will be Hawke's Bay Today.

The Magpies face their first true shield challenge of the season on Sunday when the Taniwha roll into town and ticket sales have been sluggish with less than 5000 sold.

Commercial manager Jay Campbell hopes the region isn't taking the Ranfurly Shield for granted.

Mr Campbell said there were a number of Northland fans heading south and it was up to the Bay to turn up and out-passion them.

"We have to pack the park on Sunday, and keep reminding the public this is shield country."

The challenge will be the fourth of the season after dispatching Heartland sides Mid Canterbury, Horowhenua Kapiti and Wairarapa Bush.

The Taniwha have not had their hands on the shield since 1978, when they were called North Auckland.
