The police staff torch relay to mark 75 years of women in policing is on its way around New Zealand. To mark the occasion Hawke’s Bay Today will feature a local police woman each day this week. Today, Constable Emma Lupton.

How long have you been in the police force?

I have been a constable in Napier two years in September.

What did you do before joining and what ignited your passion?

I love watching all the police programmes both fiction and non-fiction and said, one day I am going to be like Horatio Caine, a character in American crime drama CSI: Miami.

I left New Zealand in 2006 to work on Hamilton Island on the Great Barrier Reef ... working in hospitality on and off for two years. From there I moved to London where I lived, worked and travelled for five years. I arrived back in New Zealand late 2012 and looked into joining the police force.

Where was your first post and where has your career taken you?

First post was Hawke's Bay based in Napier Station. Over the past two years I have been working to pass my probationary assessments. This has included a three-month rotation on the Road Policing section.

Do you have a favourite or least favourite part of the job?

Like any job, a lot of the time it's not the job you're doing but the team you are working with. I have worked with some fantastic people who have shared a lot of knowledge. I enjoy all aspects of the job in one way or another. If I had to pick a favourite thing it would be Road Policing. If I had to pick a least favourite it would be Hotel/Bar Licence compliance checks.

Do you have a story you would like to share?

I'm sure I have lots of stories, but I will keep you all in suspense.

What do you think about the 75 Years of Women in Policing national torch relay?

I think it is a fantastic celebration and a great way to bring a community together. It will be a fun-filled day with fitness, food and donations going to a great cause. Best part is I get to abseil off Te Mata Peak, but not before I run 6km up it.

What do you do in your spare time while not at work?

I love to exercise and sign myself up to crazy sports events.

To date I have trained for and completed two full Ironman events, seven half Ironman events, multiple marathons including the Great Wall of China, Paris and the Tarawera Ultra Marathon.
