A woman died during what police described as a "serious armed incident" in Napier last tonight.

The armed offenders squad and other police were called out about 9pm after a report that a person had died at a property in the city. A man who was alleged to have been involved had left the property carrying a firearm and travelled out of Napier.

The property was cordoned off after the police found the woman's body.

Extensive road blocks were set up in the Hastings and Clive area, and the man the police had been seeking was apprehended in Clive at 11.10pm.

"Information at this time indicates the man has been shot and he is currently being treated at Hawkes Bay Hospital," said Superintendent Sandra Venables, the eastern district police commander.

She said "this was a fast moving incident and the details are still unfolding".

Ms Venables said further information would be released to the public when details became available in the morning. "However, there is no further risk to public safety."
