At a one-off winter market last night, spectators were wowed by a Matariki celebration with musical entertainment and a troupe of fire jugglers.

To celebrate the Maori New Year, people of all ages were drawn to the Hastings City Mall, enjoying all that was on offer from street food trucks, kids' entertainment, and arts and crafts.

Live music kept people on their feet throughout the evening, while special guests from Wellington, the Highly Flammable troupe of fire jugglers, wowed crowds with an array of spectacular performances.

A winter chill was not enough to keep people away from the market, where they also had a chance to view products created by some of the Young Enterprise Scheme teams from local high schools.

Attractions to keep children entertained were also available, from the big blue play blocks of the Imagination Playground, with Lego - to fit in with the Hastings City Art Gallery's new Lego exhibition - well utilised.

Hastings City Business Association manager Susan McDade said the event really brightened up the winter, when everyone tends to "hibernate a bit".
