The Environment, Conservation and Outdoor Education Trust (ECOED) received a welcome boost in the form of $5000 of BP fuel vouchers last week.
BP New Zealand community investment manager Jonty Mills joined the ECOED team at the Pan Pac Kiwi Creche, to view the facilities that look after young kiwiand provide outdoor education opportunities for Hawke's Bay students.
Mr Mills said the work the team undertake really struck a chord with us this year, as part of our BP Vouchers for Volunteers Programme.
"The fact it has a long-term sustainable focus, encompassing the environment, conservation and education all rolled into one is the main reason they were chosen as one of our highlight recipients from over 1800 applicants," he said. "We're genuinely thrilled to support the many volunteers who help out at ECOED."
ECOED general manager Al Bramley took Mr Mills for a field trip to the site at Lake Opouahi, north of Tutira. Mr Bramley said the vouchers would meet some of the transport costs for the dedicated volunteers, working to restore kiwi in the Kaweka Forest Park and help in educating our children, about living in and looking after the outdoors.
ECOED deliver the two distinctive programmes, Save Our Kiwi Hawke's Bay, which has already raised and released more than 100 kiwi into the wild, and Schools Outdoors Hawke's Bay, which provides wilderness experiences for up to 2000 students every year. The Trust is improving some facilities to better support school groups.
