Reporter Samuel is cheering on 7-year-old Sava, as he swims, bikes, and runs his way through the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon, in honour of his late brother Kosta.

The Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon and Duathlon returns to Hastings on Wednesday, February 12 next year at Mitre 10 Sports Park.

The triathlon is set to hit a milestone this season, surpassing half a million participants since its beginnings in 1992, when 500 kids entered.

For over 30 years, Sanitarium has aimed to inspire children to get active and build their confidence in the fun and inclusive environment of the triathlon.

The triathlon has become a tradition for Kiwi kids and has grown to be the world’s largest triathlon event for people under 16.

Black Ferns legends and sisters Chelsea and Alana Bremner return this year as triathlon ambassadors.

“We loved taking part in the triathlon as kids,” Alana said.

“I still remember the thrill of crossing the finish line, exhausted but so proud. My sister and I completed five triathlons growing up, and now we get to help kids experience that same joy.”

With nearly 495,000 Kiwi kids already having participated over the years, the 2024/2025 season will mark the momentous occasion of the 500,000th participant crossing the finish line.

The Bremner sisters are passionate about making sure every child, regardless of ability, feels confident and supported.

“It’s all about giving it a go and feeling like a winner, no matter what,” added Alana.

Every child who participates will receive a medal, certificate of achievement and a Tryathlete pack, which includes an official participant T-shirt, bib number stickers, a swim cap and a Rebel Sport drawstring bag.

Over the full season, 11 Tryathlon events are held across 10 locations across New Zealand.

Sanitarium national marketing manager NZ Peter Davis believes the Tryathlon is all about trying something new and giving it a go regardless of your ability.

“It’s the journey of personal growth and the pride that comes with achieving something you didn’t think was possible.”

Open to kids aged 6-15, the Tryathlon caters to all fitness levels, encouraging everyone to swim, bike, and run at their own pace.

Plus, for kids in Hastings, who aren’t quite ready to swim, there is a new duathlon alternative for kids ages 7-15 that offers a fun and achievable course with a run, bike and final run.

Entries are now open at the Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon website.

Through the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon Foundation, Sanitarium works with schools, trusts and local councils to ensure 3000 kids each year get the chance to participate, even if they wouldn’t otherwise be able to.

Around 10% of participants receive support from the foundation, with 25% of this funding coming from donations made during registration.
