THIS year's Art Deco Weekend poster was crafted miles away from the actual venue of the event - in Northland. But its designer has strong Bay roots.
It took Terry Moyle of Contour Creative Studio 180 hours to make the poster which shows a view of Marine Parade. Mr Moyle's father
was a former principal at Taradale Intermediate and his sister and brother live in Napier.
While the art deco enthusiast would love to be in Napier for Art Deco Weekend, a brush with cancer means he will still be recovering from an operation so will miss the event.
He is passionate about all things Art Deco and describes it "as a decorative approach taken to art". He said it was still as relevant now as it was in the 1920s and 30s.
Mr Moyle's business is the only one in the country specialising in art deco work. Already his postcards are for sale in the Art Deco Trust shop. The poster, however, was a completely different project with more than 80 images used to create the final product. He researched car registration plates to get those right, even down to the letters, numbers and colour of the plate.
"We couldn't fit the Boer War Memorial into the picture, so we illustrated a soldier of the period just through the New Napier Art," he said.
Mr Moyle's son formed the basis of the man whose head is peering out the side of the green vehicle. He used his family Toyota Corolla station wagon and took a photo of his son leaning out of it to create that particular image.
The face of the woman on the bike had dubious origins, she was taken from a "nude kind of photo we had seen somewhere".
Mr Moyle, a former cartoonist, artist and public relations officer, and his partner Rosie, a graphic designer, work from their home, a two bedroom cottage in Northland.
Four computers are dotted around the lounge and living area and the couple produce about 200 illustrations a year from their base. As well as selling in various locations around New Zealand, they also export their work to America. Art Deco Trust executive director Robert McGregor said the trust was contacted by Mr Moyle and having seen his work before, was happy for the company to take on this year's poster.
"It's a beautiful looking poster different from any we have done before," he said.
It had a certain subtlety to it with the colourings and tones, he said.
The Art Deco Weekend posters are already on display throughout Hawke's Bay.
