A Givealittle page has been set up to help a Hawke's Bay sporting family in its hour of need, along with a benefit hockey match featuring top New Zealand players this weekend.
The Findlay Family Benefit Match next Saturday at Park Island, Napier, will see a Hawke's Bay team takeon a New Zealand invitational team, including junior, current and former Black Sticks players.
The match was organised to raise money for sporting stalwarts the Findlay family. Taradale High School sports co-ordinator Angela Nilsson-Findlay and her husband Graeme are involved with coaching and managing primary, intermediate, secondary school and representative hockey teams. The family also has close ties with cricket, netball, surf-lifesaving and swimming.
Ms Nilsson-Findlay is battling cancer, secondary to breast cancer diagnosed in 2012.
A Givealittle page also set up for the family yesterday had raised $125 last night.
Hawke's Bay-bred Black Stick men's team player Shea McAleese said the page was for "a fantastic family and cause".
"No amount is too small."
Money raised by the page could go towards Ms Nilsson-Findlay's hospital bills, helping look after the couple's four children and a possible family trip.
The 2.30pm benefit match will be preceded by children's games, with teams captained by each of the four Findlay children. The event will also include an auction, raffle and sausage sizzle.
Entry will cost a gold coin donation and spectators are asked to wear pink in support.
